Accessibility statement

AnySurfer label

This website was subject to an accessibility audit and received the AnySurfer label.

Below you can find an overview of our efforts to make this website accessible to as many people as possible.

Font sizes and scalability

The font size is indicated in a relative manner in the style sheet; this way we respect your browser settings. An exception to this is the size of the fonts at the top of each page in the style sheet switcher: these are set in pixels.

The contents of the page remain legible in browsers that do not support CSS, such as Netscape 4.7.

Style sheet switcher

A style sheet switcher is located at the top right of every page. Every page is available in 2 font sizes: standard font size and very large font size. The website furthermore offers a high contrast colour scheme for each of the font sizes.

Apart from the style sheet switcher, there is also a 'skip to content' link at the top of the page that immediately takes you to the main content on the same page, which means you skip the navigation.

Links

  • Internal links never open in a new window
  • Links are underlined.
  • Most external links and non-html documents (pdf, doc) do open in a new window. This is announced in the link itself.
  • There are no JavaScript links.(*)

(*)JavaScript links, explanation: some links open modal windows using Javascript. If Javascript is off, these links just open in the browser window.
Special attention was paid to the accessibility of iframes which open in so-called modal boxes: each iframe which is opened this way has been given a name attribute from the link. It has also been made sure that the focus of the browser is on the iframe.

Data tables

Where necessary or relevant, data tables are provided with table headers and footers. The data tables are created automatically a few times a day using external files. These files are not under our control, which means an accessibility problem might arise.

Language

For users with a screen reader the lang attribute is indicated on every page.

Illustrations

All illustrations have an alt tag describing the content. If an illustration serves as a link to an internal or external page, the link is clearly indicated in the alt tag (instead of content description).

Flash

Flash is not used on these sites

Non-html files

The website contains sporadic links to non-html files such as doc and pdf. Some of these files contain complex diagrams, schedules or other graphical information that cannot easily be made accessible. Please contact us (kust@vlaanderen.be or +32 (0)59 55 42 11) if you would like to receive these files in another format because of a visual or other impairment.

External files

The weather charts pages contain illustrations coming automatically from external sources. Since we cannot control or adapt them, these illustrations may not have an alt-tag.
The data tables are created automatically a few times a day using external files. These files are not under our control, which means an accessibility problem might arise.
Please accept our apologies for this

Web standards

  • It is our intention that all pages on this website meet the XHMTL 1.0 Transitional standard.
  • The style sheets of this site, the CSS files determining the visual representation, also meet the standards of the W3C, the World Wide Web Consortium, to the largest possible extent. The CSS files contain non standard code, however, in order to make the visual representation in different browsers identical.
  • The visual representation was tested (recently) on the following browsers:
    • MS Internet Explorer 6 (Windows)
    • MS Internet Explorer 7 (Windows)
    • MS Internet Explorer 8 (Windows)
    • Mozilla Firefox 3.6 (Windows & OSX)
    • Apple Safari 4 (Windows & OSX)
    • Google Chrome 4 (Windows)
    • Google Chrome 5 (OSX)
    • Opera 10 (Windows & OSX)
  • All pages of this website are structured semantically wherever possible: H1 for main titles, H2 for subtitles…
